Papers

The UT Austin GAIN committee, Graduate Engineering Council, and ASEE are pleased to present the 2009 Graduate Student Technical Paper and Presentation Competition. University of Texas engineering graduate students are invited to submit a technical paper that will be included in the proceedings of GAIN 2009. The proceedings will be free of charge to all conference participants.

Technical papers can be submitted to one of the following divisions:

           Computation & simulation/Signal processing/System control
           Materials science/Nano, Micro, Bio & MEMS engineering
           Energy/Environment/Transport processes
           Manufacturing, Engineering design, and Engineering Management

Purpose:
The purpose of the technical paper competition is to foster cross-discipline transfer of knowledge. For example, a particular device being developed in electrical engineering may have applications to measurement of variables in aerospace or structural mechanics. The paper should be based on the student's research and focus on the applications of the research. As attendees of the conference will likely be from different engineering backgrounds, the papers should express technical information in a manner understandable to a general engineering audience. This is a great opportunity for students to hone skills essential to writing reports and proposals in their future careers.

In addition, two $1000 awards will be given for the best two papers.

Formatting:
Papers submitted to other conferences are welcome as long as the meet the following basic requirements:

   Papers should be 2 to 4 pages in length.
   Papers should be based on the student's own research although they may be written in groups of up to 3 people.
   Papers should include the following common elements: title, authors, abstract, introduction, experimental method, results and discussion, and conclusion.

Review Process:
Papers will be judged by a faculty committee which will recommend top papers from each division to be presented during the GAIN 2010 presentation session. The presenters will compete for awards including division prizes ($100 each) and the grand prize (additional $500). The papers will be judged according to the following criteria:

   Clarity in explaining motivation, objectives, and impact of research
   Scientific merit (i.e. logical and succinct explanation of materials, methods, and analyses)

In addition, we encourage paper competition participants to consider presenting a poster in the poster competition on the day of the event. Poster information can be found here.

Submit title and author info plus resume by December 10, 2009
