Video Submissions

This year, the GAIN team is putting together an exciting new concept. Increasingly, technology is motivating peer to peer review via the personal videos posted on Web Forums like YouTube, Google, and iTunes.

The team has put their creativity and innovation together. The GAIN conference will now include a digital video submission category. This category will be styled on the premise of creating podcast-like videos which will be hosted on YouTube that can be peer reviewed actively on the website. The videos may be continually improved by the submitters until three weeks proceeding the GAIN conference. The submitters are required to first create an account with us. After the account is approved, an informative video may be uploaded to our YouTube host.

Review Process:
Videos will be judged by a faculty committee which will recommend top papers from each division to be presented during the GAIN 2008 presentation session. The video creators will compete for awards including division prizes ($100 each) and the grand prize (additional $500). The videos will be judged according to the following criteria:

Clarity in explaining motivation, objectives, and impact of research
Scientific merit (i.e. logical and succinct explanation of materials, methods, and analysis)
Peer Review Score
Creativity

The top ten videos will be presented at the event to an industry/faculty panel. As many of the other videos as can be uploaded and played at the event, will be played on a large screen throughout the Poster Session on a large Video Screen.

In addition, we encourage video competition participants to consider presenting a poster in the Poster Competition on the day of the event and entering the Paper Competition. Poster information can be found here. Paper information can be found here.

User Guidelines:

In general, video presentations will adhere to the legal guidelines found on the YouTube website itself; however, they will also be independently reviewed by the GAIN team for content (no content that would otherwise be deemed unacceptable at an academic conference).

The GAIN team claims no responsibility or ownership of the technological claims made on the videos. Furthermore, any other academic or research claims made on the videos in no way represent the GAIN team's views of The University of Texas at Austin in general. The views, opinions, and claims expressed on the videos are themselves property of and the responsibility of the student presenters and their respective research labs.

For general purposes, the GAIN team will monitor the videos, but do not make any claims regarding the validity of the content. That burden rests on the graduate students and their associated labs. We require that the posts are academically rigorous and that they are always in good taste (no profanity, slander, or hateful speech). Users not interested in following these two guidelines will be removed from the forum immediately and notification will be made to their respective graduate departments. After all, this is not only an opportunity to reach out to Industry, but it is an opportunity to represent UT and is most definitely a professional event!

To upload a video,

1. Click the orange link below. A new browser window opens
2. Click the "Sign in" link at the upper right corner of the page if you already have a youtube account. If not, click "Sign Up" to create an account
3. After signing in, click on "Groups" and on the page that opens, click "UT GAIN 2009"
4. Click "Join this group"
5. We will review your membership request and you will be notified when you are accepted.
